They're down at the bottom under the quick win, so scrolllllll   Something to think about in the meantime: Every email you send arrives at a person who is doing something else and wants to get OUT of the inbox as fast as possible.   So stop being hard on yourself if you didn't get the opens you wanted.  Email attribution How do you know your emails work?  Someone opens an email. Twenty nine days later they buy something. Or 459 days later, they made an enquiry. Maybe your platform credits email or it doesn't.    Might not have been email at all. Could have been a LinkedIn post, a conversation with a colleague, a price change, or the fact they finally had budget.   It usually is a combination of exposure, repetition, trust building, need and emotion that causes the action to convert.   Why every attribution model undercounts email Last click hands the credit to branded search, because someone read your email, thought about it, then googled you.   First click structurally excludes email, since to be on your list they'd already encountered you.   Time decay punishes exactly the work email does, because awareness and trust build over months.   And the engagement window most ESPs use is correlation but it's crap. People who open your emails are more engaged anyway, and more engaged people buy more.   When an email lands, someone registers it. Remembers it. Mentions it in a meeting. Forwards it to whoever owns the budget. Screenshots it into a group chat.    That is the effect of exposure    All of that is attribution. It's just brain attribution, and there's no pixel for it.   So the click isn't the effect of your email. It's the small visible tip of a mostly invisible process.   The only question that matters   If you stopped doing it, what would happen?   That's attribution.  READ: Email attribution → From the Vault A blog a day keeps the spam filter away  ⌚ 3 min read: → Email operations: the processes that turn a pile of campaigns into a programme ⌚ 5 min read: → Email behaving badly: why compliance will not save your deliverability ⌚ 4 min read: → Discovery optimisation and email: why being found is getting harder, and what your list is worth now The Science of Email Design Learn the psychology behind email design, structure and hierarchy Teach me this → The Inbox Drop Build your early warning system Deliverability problems almost never arrive suddenly (but they do sometimes).   The reason businesses get caught out isn't that the signals were hidden. It's that nobody had decided which numbers mattered, or what would count as worrying.   First: stop watching the wrong numbers Open rate, click rate, revenue, leads, everything happening before are all lagging.   By the time they've visibly moved, the cause is weeks/months old.   These move first: → Spam complaint rate, per send and per provider. Your most important number, and the one with an enforced ceiling behind it → Complaint count, not just rate, if your list is small → Hard bounce rate, and any sudden change in it → Deferral patterns by provider. Repeated deferrals mean that provider is throttling you → Authentication pass rates → Placement by provider, tracked as a trend → First-email engagement on new subscribers   Then give them thresholds These are deliberately more conservative than the published ceilings, because the published ceilings are where you get punished, not where you should start worrying.   Spam complaint rate Under 0.02% fine. 0.02 to 0.1% amber, look this week. 0.1 to 0.3% red, stop broad sending. Above 0.3%, pause everything non-essential.   Spam placement, per provider Up to 15% normal. 15 to 25% amber. 26 to 50% red, real audience impact. Over 50%, get help.   Hard bounces Any sudden increase is amber whatever the level. Sustained elevation is red.   Authentication Below 100% is amber immediately. There's no acceptable level of failure.   Build it without buying anything Set up Google Postmaster Tools. Free, twenty minutes. Set up Microsoft SNDS, particularly if any of your audience is B2B. Export the same handful of metrics from your ESP weekly. Same day each week so the series is comparable. One sheet, conditional formatting, green amber red. Unsophisticated and it'll catch almost everything a paid tool would. Add a placement reading on a regular cadence. Name the person who looks, and when. Fifteen minutes a week in someone's calendar. And take your baseline now, while nothing is wrong. An alert is a comparison. Without a baseline, a wobble becomes a fortnight of arguing about whether it's even unusual. Build my early warning system → Quick win for you The triage test - from my masterclass!  Nobody goes into their inbox to read your email. They go in to get something done, or because it's a habit.    And what they're doing in there is triage. Every email gets sorted into one of three:   1. Does this need me now? Clients, the boss, anything on fire. Dealt with immediately. House insurance renewal or promotion   2. Can it wait? Flagged, left unread, "I'll come back to it." Often never.   3. Can it go? Deleted, archived, scrolled past, unsubscribe...   Most marketing email lives in box three!!   So before your next send, GET REAL.    You need to understand most of your emails will be ignored, so make the subject line & preheader COUNT.  LEARN: Inbox Psychology What even is my job? I hardly talk about my services, so hope this helps: I'm an email and CRM consultant. 12+ years experience.   I work with in-house teams to fix and improve their email, rather than taking it off their hands.   That looks like: → Strategy workshops. A full day, in person, with your team. → Deliverability audits. Finding out how big your spam problem is and how to fix it → Training. Bespoke sessions for teams who need to level up. → Consultancy and 1-1s. Ongoing support, or just someone to think it through with. → HubSpot. Implementations and optimisation through my agency.   2027 diary is open. Get in touch to explore I'd tell you this email worked but I genuinely cannot prove it (lol)   Until next time!   Beth ✌️ I have ADHD (IFYKYK) so please excuse any typos and spelling errors in this email.
